BIA - Business Impact Analysis

The purpose of the Business Impact  Analysis (BIA) is to quantify the cost of outage over time and determine the business priorities of the day to day processes and business applications..

A better way to express this is to quantify the ‘value of availability’ What is the value of having this department, building, system, business process available to the enterprise?

By establishing priorities based on the value that entity has on the overall operation of the enterprise we can develop strategies to ensure that entity will be available when needed (RTO - Recovery Time Objective). The BIA is the foundation the strategies are built upon and the dollar justification for the recovery.

The Business Impact Analysis typically includes a management presentation that can be used to assist executive management with cost/benefit analysis, set the Recovery Time Objectives for the critical Business Processes and Information Technology Applications, and lend credibility to the upcoming Plan development effort.
